How much attention was paid to the news (7/14/2011) that the United States Government had just suffered its greatest “cyber-theft” in the nation’s history?  I read a major metropolitan newspaper every day and somehow I missed it.

As a counselor for both in class and online stop theft classes I am alerted to stories on the Internet regarding theft.  This tiny blurb from the Associated Press ran across my screen.  When I say tiny, I mean 133 words.  How can such a story only be worthy of 133 words.  My blog will be longer, I assure you!

Can’t Fool the Government

It seems like our government is being defrauded at every turn from FEMA to Medicare to Social Security, there are people stealing from our government all the time.  So who stole all this classified information?  According to sources in our government, the blame is being targeted toward an unspecified foreign nation. Huh?

The Deputy Secretary of Defense, William Lynn, said they have a pretty good idea which nation stole the 24,000 files from a defense industry computer back in March!

Our Government in Action

Do not fear fellow Americans the Pentagon is on it!  The prestigious Pentagon has developed new cyber security rules that emphasize deeper defenses, more collaboration with private industry and new steps to stop thefts by malicious insiders.  This never would have happened in the 1950s or 60s!
